Resistance 2 Hands On: Single Player

With less than a month to go until the release of Resistance 2, we finally had the chance to get our hands on the Single Player campaign. We were lucky enough to get to play through two levels; Iceland and Orick.
Being the "seasoned veterans" that we are, we didn't want to just try the game out, we wanted to try it out on Super Human. So we dived straight in to the first level to see how it compares to the difficulty of Resistance: Fall of Man.
The first level we tried was Iceland and this acts as a tutorial to the game. It explains how the new controls work, as well as some weapons - like the Magnum. The good thing is, that while the gameplay is relatively simple, the massive Goliath in the background really helps to enhance the atmosphere and give the level a sense of scale.
The only problem we had was a lack of sound. At one point in particular, you're really punished for not actually listening to your objective and aside from a mistimed jump, this was the only time we actually died. So far, Super Human isn't needing us to be overly Super Human.
Next, we tried out Orick. Instantly the difficulty seemed to ramp up as we were engulfed by Bullseye bullets through thick fog and only really lasted a few seconds. However, a well timed grenade sorted them out on the second try and we progressed.
Before we started Orick, we were warned that it was still heavily a work in progress, and this was apparent as the waypoint system wasn't working overly well. This led to a bit of wandering around aimlessly, but it's understandable when the product isn't finished.
We had some fun with the new invisible enemies and they really keep you on your toes, even if they do just come from infront of you all the time. I guess if they didn't it would be pretty hard though.
The ravagers are much more aggressive in the single player than they are in the co-op mode as instead of setting up in a defensive pose, they rushed us instantly with their shield up, which was fun. This was followed by a confrontation with a Titan, which took a few tries - they take some serious punishment.
Later on in Orick, you also joined up with the other presumably named members of the Spectors and they fight alongside you. One comical moment came as a member (using the Marksman) was trying to melee a Ravager instead of shoot it, which was interesting.
All in all, the single player campaign was pretty impressive and aside from a few bugs it was very solid. It's difficult to say how Super Human compared with Resistance: Fall of Man. You can never have a game that's too hard though.

Hands On

Stumble It!
